Korokan Gate Restoration Revealed

Fukuoka City has revealed progress on the reconstruction of Korokan, an ancient state guesthouse used to host foreign envoys from the Asuka to Heian periods. On April 28, officials opened the wooden framework of the East Gate of the North Hall to the media at the Korokan ruins site in Chuo Ward. The structure uses 12 pillars, each about 40 centimeters in diameter, made from locally sourced hinoki cypress. The reconstruction follows historical techniques modeled on existing structures such as Todaiji Temple gate in Nara. The gate is expected to reach about six meters in height and ten meters in width upon completion in October. Additional restoration work, including surrounding walls, will continue into the next fiscal year. Source: Fukuoka City / TNC News
