On Apr. 14, Kumamoto Prefecture Governor Ikuo Kabashima revealed the management plan for Kumamoto Airport for its privatization in April 2020. Over the next thirty years, the airport aims to double the number of passengers to 6.22 million by opening new routes for international and domestic flights. The joint-operation company, consisting of Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. and more, intends to increase the number of international routes from the current four to seventeen, and create the best international network amongst other local airports in Japan. A renovation of the airport terminal which includes a large-scale expansion of the departure area as well as the introduction of the latest x-ray security scanner is scheduled by 2023.
