Summer festivals are returning to Kyushu in the third year of dealing with the new coronavirus pandemic. In July, Kokura Gion Daiko in Kitakyushu City resumes its 400 years of tradition by holding its famous drum competition in a new form. The city’s Kurosaki Gion Yamakasa would also return this year. Kumamoto’s Yamaga Lantern Festival sought some 400 women to bear golden lanterns on their heads and perform at the nostalgic and beautiful dance event in August. Asakura City’s Cormorant Fishing (ukai) at Harazuru Onsen began its 2022 season and would continue until the end of August. Source: Mainichi / RKB / NHK / KBC
