On February 7th, a pivotal collaboration agreement was forged among Kumamoto City, JR Kyushu, and Sumitomo Corporation, aiming for carbon neutrality by the year 2050. This ambitious partnership is set to concentrate on six crucial areas that are integral to achieving decarbonization. These areas include the advancement of renewable energy sources, the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs), and the implementation of energy conservation measures. Additionally, there’s a plan in motion to initiate a grid storage business in the city by mid-2024. The partnership is committed to not only exploring the potential expansion of this storage business but also to conducting trials on autonomous driving technologies and joining forces in efforts related to disaster prevention and mitigation. Mayor Kazufumi Onishi stressed the significance of developing a city that can withstand disasters and the enhancement of essential lifeline infrastructures, underscoring the comprehensive approach towards achieving a sustainable and resilient urban environment.
