Kumamoto City will begin officially recognizing the partnerships of LGBT couples from April 2019. According to the statement of Kumamoto City Mayor Kazufumi Onishi at a press conference on Dec. 4, the city is aiming to provide a more comfortable living environment to the couples as well as to nurture a deeper understanding of sexual minorities among the citizens. Kumamoto will be the second city in the Kyushu area to recognize LGBT partnerships. The cities of Nagasaki and Kitakyushu are currently considering to establish a similar system.
