Kumamoto Mayor Takes Pay Cut Over Tram Issues

Facing repeated operational failures in the Kumamoto City tram network, including a March 2025 collision that injured 14 passengers, Mayor Kazufumi Onishi announced on May 30 the formation of a 16-member task force to lead a full-scale overhaul. The city will present a revised budget that includes ¥180 million in safety upgrades such as speedometers, while Onishi will take a 20% pay cut for three months starting July. A reform plan is expected by the end of 2025 to ensure sustainable public transit operations. Source: Kumamoto City
