Kumamoto Prefecture has begun to solicit enterprises, such as non-profit organizations or trading companies, that issue green power certification for the sale of green power credits to companies. The green power in this instance is that generated from methane and other underground gases. The companies purchasing the certification can thereby promote themselves as environmentally friendly. The prefecture says they are the first local government in the country to launch such a solicitation, though Saga Prefecture and others are taking steps toward the sale of green power credits.
