Kumamoto University to Launch Semiconductor Graduate Program in Spring 2025

Kumamoto University announced plans to open a new graduate school focusing on semiconductor and information mathematics education in spring 2025. The initiative responds to the presence of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, which has already inaugurated its first factory in Kikuyo town, Kumamoto Prefecture, and has announced plans for a second.

The new department aims to cultivate advanced professionals skilled in semiconductor systems and information mathematics, capable of contributing both locally and internationally. The Master’s program will admit 120 students, while the Ph.D. program will have a capacity of 22 students. President Hisao Ogawa emphasized the strategic timing of the announcement to attract prospective students eager to seize emerging opportunities in this field.

The university plans to collaborate broadly with TSMC, Taiwanese universities, and other domestic and international entities, essentially creating a dedicated “Semiconductor Graduate School”. Applications will open this summer, with acceptance announcements expected by October. The curriculum will also include remedial courses to assist students from different academic backgrounds in mastering fundamental semiconductor-related topics. Source: TKU
