Kyuden Inches Closer to Restarting Reactors

At a meeting of Kyushu Electric Power Company shareholders held on June 26, seven proposals demanding the abandonment of nuclear power were all voted down. In light of this, Kyuden will apply for a safety inspection required to restart its two nuclear power plants, Genkai and Sendai. Meanwhile, one municipality near the power plants has yet to sign a safety agreement with Kyuden, so a big hurdle remains in gaining the understanding of the local communities. Kyuden President Uryu seemed relieved after the four-hour shareholders’ meeting saying, “Judging by the number of proposals accepted, an understanding seems to have been gained regarding the restarting of the reactors.” He added that he hopes to gain the understanding of Imari City (Saga Prefecture), the lone municipality located within an Urgent Protective Action Planning Zone (UPZ) that has yet to conclude a safety agreement with Kyuden.
