Kyuden Remains in the Red

In its financial statement for the first half ended September 2014, Kyushu Electric Power Company recorded losses for the fourth straight year. Last year’s rate hike helped Kyuden reduce its deficit, but the cost of fuel for its fossil fuel-burning power plants kept the company firmly in the red. With nuclear power plant restarts not expected until at least after the new year, it is highly likely that Kyuden will end up reporting a loss for fiscal 2014. Kyuden reported ¥929.5 billion in sales, up 7.1% over last year, but electricity sales fell in the summer due to the lower temperatures. Although this was offset by last spring’s rate hike, the company recorded ordinary losses of ¥31.9 billion and net losses of ¥35.9 billion. Kyuden says its monthly revenues will improve by ¥20 billion if the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors at Sendai Nuclear Power Plant (Satsumasendai, Kagoshima Pref.) are allowed to restart, but it is still unclear whether the company will be able to restart the aging No. 1 reactor at the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant (Genkai Town, Saga Pref.).
