Kyushu Birth Rate Decline

According to the 2016 demographics released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on June 2, the total birth rate (estimated number of children a woman gives birth to in her lifetime) fell below the previous year in five prefectures. These include Fukuoka and Kumamoto among the eight prefectures in Kyushu. As with all national trends, the rising trend of the previous year turned negative in many prefectures. The total birth rate of Fukuoka (1.50), Kumamoto (1.66), Kagoshima (1.68) respectively decreased by 0.02 points. Saga (1.63), Okinawa (1.95) decreased by 0.01 points. Meanwhile, that of Oita rose by 0.06 points to 1.65, and Nagasaki by 0.04 points to 1.71. Miyazaki was flat at 1.71. However, compared to other parts of Japan, Kyushu maintains relatively high rates. Okinawa stayed at the top in the country, and all the 8 prefectures exceeds the national average (1.44), with Nagasaki, Miyazaki, Kagoshima in the 3rd to 5th. Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 6/6/2017
