The Kyushu Economic Research Center released its Kyushu Economic White Paper 2009, titled The Global Economic Downturn and Regional Companies. It describes the poor performance of the export-focused industries that drive the regional economy, including the auto industry and the semiconductor industry. The paper asserts that the key for Kyushu to escape the economic doldrums is to improve the technical capabilities of its R&D centers, enable more of mergers and acquisitions, and allow greater participation by new enterprises in Kyushu’s leading industries build up regional strengths.
