The Fukuoka City-based Kyushu Economic Research Center has released their Kyushu Economic White Paper for 2012. Based on an analysis of the impact of the Tohoku disaster and the historically high valuation of the yen, they report that automakers and other companies are boosting their production in the region due to its proximity to Asia and relatively inexpensive production costs. They think the region has the potential to become the driver of the national economy if local SMBEs take advantage of business opportunities, develop new products, and expand their sales channels.
