On Feb. 13 Kyushu Electric Power, Co. (Kyuden) announced their decision to cease operation of the No. 2 reactor at the Genkai Nuclear Plant. The reactor began operation in 1981 with a 40-year service expectancy which will end in March 2021. Kyuden originally planned for an extension of operation. Huge costs to improve reactor safety after restarting the unit and the inability to build a sufficient counterterrorism facility (a requirement under Japan’s new nuclear safety laws) are some of the reasons for ceasing operation of the reactor.
