Kyushu Electric said the easily procured oil with a high sulfur content was in a form rendering it difficult to use, so they do not consider that as an acceptable substitute for the regional nuclear power plants whose operations are currently suspended. This exacerbates concerns of an energy shortage this summer. The utility has switched to oil with a low sulfur content in recent years out of environmental considerations, and as a consequence they have discarded their equipment for removing sulfur from the oil.
