It has come to light that Fukuoka and Saga prefectures are mulling a new “smart” expressway interchange on the Kyushu Expressway between the Tosu Junction and Kurume to be located at Ajisaka in Ogori City, Fukuoka. The aim of the move is twofold: 1) to ensure smooth transportation links for the greater Kyushu region by adding an interchange in a strategic location and 2) to accelerate the future development of a nearby industrial complex. At present, the 10.6 km distance between Tosu and Kurume is the longest stretch of uninterrupted expressway in Fukuoka south of the Fukuoka Interchange. Officials hope a new interchange near the busy Tosu Junction will help alleviate traffic congestion. The new interchange is scheduled to go into operation in fiscal 2017.
