Kyushu Governors Not Enthusiastic about Sharing Okinawa’s Burden of U.S. Bases

The Nishi-Nippon Shimbun conducted a survey of Kyushu’s seven governors regarding their views of the American military bases on Okinawa. All understood the difficulties faced by the people of Okinawa, where 74% of the American military facilities are located, but which accounts for only 0.6% of Japan’s land area. Most support the military alliance, but most say the U.S.–Japan treaty should be revised, and none are anxious to accept American troops in their prefecture. They say it would be difficult to obtain the consent of the local people.
