The Kyushu branch of the Japanese Geotechnical Society completed the revision of its database on soil conditions and the ground in all the Kyushu prefectures, enabling a more detailed understanding of the land structure beneath the major regional cities. One of the enhancements has been to provide a significant upgrade to the information on the fault near the center of Fukuoka City, where a major earthquake occurred seven years ago. The Geo-Disaster Lab of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at Kyushu University plans to use the information to create a hazard map for the areas at greatest risk during an earthquake.
