Kyushu Lay Judges Convict 109 in 93 Cases in First Year


In the one year since citizens began serving as lay judges in criminal cases in Kyushu, the panels have rendered judgments against 109 defendants in 93 cases. All the defendants were found guilty, and two of the defendants were given life terms. The prosecutors have yet to ask a panel for the death penalty since the system was instituted.
