The appreciation of the yen combined with falling stock prices will likely have a severe impact on the semiconductor and auto industries, the backbone industries of Kyushu. Most of the large electric machinery and semiconductor producers have sharply revised downward their revenue and earnings projections for the year ended March 2009. With the auto industry, they have already begun taking steps to cut production, reduce personnel, and limit capital spending.
