Kyushu Norovirus Cases Lead Nation

Numerous cases of nororvirus, a virus that causes infectious gastroenteritis, have been reported throughout Japan, and so far four people have died. While the virus is believed to have passed its peak, patient numbers per hospital (for the week ended Jan. 12) have exceeded alert levels in many areas, with Oita (21.25) and Kagoshima (18.11) prefectures leading the way. Norovirus is contracted orally by way of the hands and food. Shellfish that have not been sufficiently heated pose a high risk for norovirus, as do other foods contaminated by infected persons. The virus incubates for one or two days before symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea, arise. There are no vaccines, so the best course of action is to take lots of fluids. To prevent infection, wash your hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before eating. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 1/23
