Kyushu Regions Struggle to Secure Electricity Supplies

Some local governments in Kyushu are facing hardship as a surge in electricity prices made more power retailers exit the market. Hyuga City in Miyazaki Prefecture requested local elementary and junior high schools to turn off classroom lights right after school hours to save energy: the city has resorted to a national power security program since May due to the sudden termination of power supply from West Electric Power. Other municipalities have paid tens of millions of yen under similar circumstances to prevent regional power cuts. Source: Yomiuri / Denki Shimbun
