Kyushu Remote Islands Ask Visitors to Stay Away

Remote islands in Kyushu are sending out messages to discourage people from visiting during the Golden Week holidays. The promotional committee for remote islands in Fukuoka Prefecture recently held a meeting, in which concerns over continued visits of nonresidents for sightseeing and fishing were discussed. To protect islanders, the committee asks people not to visit Genkai Island, Orono Island, and others for the time being. Similar worries prevail in other prefectures, including Kagoshima and Nagasaki. Each island struggles to implement effective countermeasures, including closing campgrounds or issuing coupons to be used on visits in the future. As older people represent a significant portion of island populations, these places are at more risk and have fewer resources to deal with treatment and care. Sources: NHK / Nikkei / Mainichi
