JR Kyushu plans to restore full Kyushu Shinkansen service on September 18. The Kumamoto-Shin-Minamata section has remained closed since the July 28 Kumamoto earthquake, with service set to resume 52 days after the disaster. Trains will operate at reduced speeds near heavily damaged Shin-Yatsushiro Station, adding up to eight minutes to southbound journeys and moving some northbound departures up to nine minutes earlier. Through services between Kagoshima Chuo and Honshu will operate at about 90% of their pre-earthquake frequency. JR Kyushu said about 900 sections of track and related structures were damaged, including three bridge piers that shifted or sank near the Hinagu fault zone.
