Kyushu Shinkansen to Transport Seafood to Ease Truck Driver Shortage

The Kyushu Shinkansen (bullet train) made an experimental high-speed transport with a load of freshly caught fish, called “Hatsu-gatsuo,” from Amami-Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture to Fukuoka on February 21. The train was used to transport the fish to Fukuoka in one hour, while the usual transportation time by truck takes about four hours. The experiment aims to solve the labor shortage in the logistics industry and address environmental concerns. This is not the first time that Shinkansen has transported goods along with passengers; JR Kyushu has already transported fresh vegetables from Kagoshima to Fukuoka and Takamatsu, and has also transported Sagawa Express’ parcels and Tottori’s snow crab to Kagoshima by partnering with other companies.
