Kyushu Trade Surplus Despite Auto Slump

Moji Customs reported that the Kyushu economic zone—including Okinawa and Yamaguchi—recorded a trade surplus of ¥153.2 billion in August, its seventh straight month in the black. Exports rose 2.6% year-on-year to ¥999 billion, driven by strong demand for semiconductor components. However, shipments to the U.S. fell 24.6% to ¥94.3 billion under ongoing Trump administration tariffs. Auto exports dropped 39.6% to ¥47.3 billion, marking five consecutive months of decline. Imports grew 3.6% to ¥845.8 billion, led by aerospace-related goods. The recent tariff reduction from 25% to 15% raises questions about the outlook for regional trade. Source: NHK
