Kyushu University Associate Professor Makes ALS Discovery

A Kyushu University associate professor, Ryo Yamasaki, and his fellow researchers discovered the possibility of slowing down the progress of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) by activating a specific kind of immune cells. The cells are called macrophages and help remove proteins that show abnormal aggression in the peripheral nerves of ALS patients. The discovery was introduced in Scientific Reports. ALS is a rapidly progressing neurodegenerative disease with limited treatment options and no cure, with approximately ten thousand domestic patients. Source: Kyushu University
