Kyushu University Cat Lovers Launch Research Project to Solve Tortoiseshell Mystery

Kyushu University in Japan has launched a research project to uncover the mystery behind the genes of tortoiseshell cats. The project is led by Professor Hiroyuki Sasaki, who is a molecular biology and genetics specialist and is backed by a team of cat-loving researchers. The project is focused on finding the gene that determines the tortoiseshell coat color and is being funded through crowdfunding. Within a month of starting the campaign, the project has raised nearly 8 million yen and has received over 400 comments of support. The researchers are aiming to minimize the burden on the cats during the research process and have so far collected blood and tissues from animal clinics during surgeries and exams. The project is a hot topic among cat lovers and the researchers hope that it will lead to better health and medical care for both cats and humans and inspire more interest in basic science.
