A research group from Kyushu University has announced findings from their study on seaweed beds in Okagaki Town, aimed at increasing the absorption of carbon dioxide by marine plants as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gases. The study identified damage to seaweed by sea urchins, with plans to address this issue in the coming fiscal year. Seaweed photosynthesis plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gases, attracting global attention to “blue carbon.” The university, in collaboration with Toyota Motor Kyushu, has been researching ways to enhance marine vegetation. Plans include eradicating harmful sea urchins and developing techniques to cultivate seaweed in areas affected by “isoyake,” or seaweed depletion. Source: NHK
