Kyushu’s First Commercial-Scale Tidal Power Project to Begin in Nagasaki

Kyuden Mirai Energy, a renewable energy subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power, has unveiled a new tidal power generator in Nagasaki, marking Japan’s first commercial-scale tidal energy demonstration. The generator, with a capacity of 1,100 kW—2.2 times the previous model—will begin testing off Goto City in February.

The device will be installed 40 meters underwater in the Naru Strait between Hisaka and Naru islands. Expected to generate approximately 2.41 million kWh annually, enough to power 800 households, the electricity will be fed into Kyushu Electric Power’s grid.

Tidal energy, which utilizes ocean currents, offers stable power generation unaffected by weather conditions. While Europe leads in commercialization, Japan has yet to establish large-scale projects. The demonstration, part of an Environment Ministry initiative running through fiscal 2025, aims to evaluate durability and develop a viable business model for future commercialization.
