Local Group Using Facebook to Help End Drunk Driving

If we can go one year without a drunk driving accident, this site will disappear.” So beckons a Facebook page that lists the number of consecutive days without a drunk driving accident within the prefecture. In the more than two years that that site has been live, the longest streak of accident-free days has been 11. The page, Operation DDD (Don’t Drive & Drive), is administered by a group of employees from local advertising agencies and radio stations. The page lists the number of accident-free days on a yellow background. When an accident occurs, the background changes to orange, and if there are three or more accidents in one day, it changes to red. The site uses Prefectural Police statistics sent by email to the administrator every morning. Since launching, the page has garnered over 1,700 “Likes”, and the administrators hope that daily updates on the drunk driving situation will lead to fewer accidents.
