On Jan. 19 the lawyer of a 20 year old Fukuoka man filed a complaint with the Fukuoka District court claiming that the refusal of his client’s application to Fukuoka Women’s University, a public university in Higashi Ward, was unconstitutional on the grounds of gender discrimination. The man is demanding that his application be reinstated and is requesting ¥660,000 in damages. In November 2014, the man submitted his application for spring 2015 admission to the Department of Food and Health Sciences, but it was revoked because one of the university’s requirements is that applicants must be female. In a statement, the man said, “The university is a public institution supported by taxes. If my application is refused, I will be forced to attend another university outside of the prefecture or a private school.” An official from Fukuoka Women’s University refused to comment because the university had not received the complaint yet.
