U.S.-based Asia Pacific Land (APL) will invest over ¥300 billion to construct Kyushu’s largest data center in Itoshima City, Fukuoka. The 122,000-square-meter site near the Maebaru Interchange will feature six buildings with a total capacity of 300 megawatts. Construction begins in 2025, with phased operations starting in 2029 and full completion by 2034.
This is APL’s second major project in Fukuoka, following a smaller center in Kitakyushu. The company aims to position Fukuoka as Japan’s third data hub after Tokyo and Osaka. Governor Seitaro Hattori praised the initiative, citing the importance of data infrastructure for AI development.
While demand for regional data centers grows, challenges include securing electricity as Kyushu faces increasing energy needs due to semiconductor industry expansion. Energy efficiency will also be key to sustaining such large-scale operations. Source: Yomiuri
