Majority of Fukuoka’s Shut-ins aged 40 or above

Fukuoka Prefecture reported over 1,100 confirmed shut-ins (hikikomori) in municipalities other than Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City. The first survey on those who remained isolated at home for more than six months except for limited activities, such as buying food at convenience stores, disclosed that over 70% of the population are aged 40 or above. The proportion of hikikomori people aged 20 ~ 39 stood at 21%. The prefecture considers that the number of hikikomori people is much larger than this, and a more robust support system is needed.
