Mask & Ride For Fukuoka’s Subways – Mayor Announces Extensions for Financial Support

Fukuoka City Mayor Shoichiro Takashima announced that as of May 15, Fukuoka City would start a “Mask & Ride” initiative whereby employees of Fukuoka City subway will check passengers as they pass through the ticket for face masks. From May 15 to May 18, subway staff will distribute masks during the morning rush hour. Then from May 19, the public will be able to purchase a mask at any subway station for ¥50. The proceeds of the sale will go to the Arigato Kikin (Thank You Fund), which provides financial support to medical institutions affected by the impact of new coronavirus and individuals who have contracted the disease. Ward offices will accept donations of unused masks from May 15. These tasukeiai (mutual aid) masks will be distributed to overseas visitors who might be unaware of the local situation at some locations, such as the Fukuoka Airport Subway Station. The city hopes to see all residents wearing masks on public transport.

These plans are part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the virus and help people whose livelihoods have been adversely affected. Until the end of May, Fukuoka City will continue to help cover up to 80% of the rent for stores that have temporarily closed or reduced their business hours. Fees for daycare services will also be offered at a reduced rate until the end of this month. The deadline for returning to work following childcare leave remains set on July 1.

More information about the support that is currently available can be found on the Fukuoka City website. The city is encouraging people to remain vigilant despite the decision to lift many restrictions. Officials hope to see all residents adapt their behavior in response to the new coronavirus’s continued threat rather than revert to their previous daily routine.
