To mark the 80th anniversary of the war’s end, a 3m by 20m oil painting depicting Japanese repatriates leaving former Manchuria will be shown in Fukuoka for the first time. The work, “1946” by Chinese artist Wang Xiqi, portrays hundreds boarding ships at Huludao. Hakata Port was one of Japan’s largest repatriation hubs, receiving about 1.39 million returnees. With firsthand storytellers dwindling, organizers hope the November exhibition at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum will encourage historical reflection and peace awareness. Source: NHK
