Mayor Announces Fukuoka’s Vaccination Strategy

Fukuoka City announced a five-month plan to vaccinate the city’s population against the new coronavirus. The mayor of the city, Soichiro Takashima, told a press conference on Feb. 1 that vaccinations would be first given to (1) senior residents and elderly-care workers, then to (2) school teachers and staff, nursery teachers, and police officers in the earliest two months. Vaccination for (3) residents with underlying diseases and others would follow in the latter three months. These priority levels for approximately 1.3 million target citizens(*) were set independently by Fukuoka City. The city plans to open special venues for vaccination at Marine Messe and seven other spots, in addition to dispatching vaccine administrators to elderly care homes. Individual residents would also be able to take vaccines at some local medical clinics. The start dates for vaccinations remain undecided as of Feb. 2. *The city is responsible for the vaccination of residents except for medical workers and children of 15 years of age and younger. Vaccinations for local medical workers will be handled by Fukuoka Prefecture at an earlier stage. Source: Fukuoka City / NHK / KBC
