Mayor Rules Out “Flat Out” Restrictions Over Obon Travel

The Fukuoka City Mayor, Soichiro Takashima, mentioned at a press conference on Aug. 4 that the city is not planning to restrict inter-regional travel during the Obon homecoming season. Instead, he encourages those who travel into and out of Fukuoka to give adequate consideration when planning their trips, such as being flexible with travel dates to avoid congestion. He also explained that over-80% of the recent COVID-19 infections occurred at eateries that serve alcoholic beverages. The city would collaborate with related business associations and groups to make sure individual shops follow the anti-coronavirus guidelines. Asahi
