Munakata Taisha’s autumn grand festival opened on October 1 with the “Miare Festival,” a centuries-old ritual featuring more than 100 fishing boats adorned with colorful banners. The boats escorted sacred objects from Okinoshima’s Okitsu Shrine and Oshima’s Nakatsu Shrine to Hetsu Shrine on the mainland, symbolizing the reunion of Munakata’s three goddesses. The sea parade across the Genkai Sea lasted about an hour before arriving at KonominatoPort. The festival, celebrating maritime safety and abundant harvests, continues through October 3.
