Mongol Invasion Shipwreck Unearthed Off Takashima

The Matsura City Board of Education in Nagasaki announced the discovery of a wooden structure off Takashima, believed to be a shipwreck from the Kamakura period’s Mongol invasions. This marks the third such shipwreck, following finds in 2011 and 2014. Nearby, 13th-14th century Chinese pottery was unearthed. The structure, covered to prevent shipworm damage, will be further assessed post-2024. Professor Yoshifumi Ikeda, who led the research, emphasized the find’s significance in understanding the Mongol army’s invasion scale. The area has previously revealed 4,000 Mongol-era artifacts, solidifying its historical importance. Source: RKB
