Monkey On The Loose In Downtown Fukuoka

On May 13, the Fukuoka Prefectural Police received about 20 reports of a large monkey roaming around Tenjin (Chuo Ward) and parts of Hakata Ward. Based on the locations given, the police determined it to be a single monkey, and no injuries were reported. On the morning of May 13, several people called 110 to report a “big monkey wandering around” and a “monkey climbing a tree” in Hakata Ward. Later in the afternoon, the monkey was sighted along Oyafuko-dori in Tenjin. The Central Police Station sent out a 30-person-strong crew to search for the primate, but they were unable to locate it. The police have been receiving reports of monkeys in the city since May 6. In Jonan and Sawara Wards, children have been attacked and injured by monkeys, so City Hall and the police are asking residents to exercise caution in the event of a monkey sighting.
