The Nishinippon Shimbun reports concerns are growing that Kyushu will become a de facto subtropical island due to climate change. As signs of the possible change, the newspaper cites reports of the denuding of agricultural products, finfish, and shellfish caused by high temperatures, and the northward migration of harmful organisms. The changes are extending to the seabed, as a forest of two-meter long seaweed with thorns is growing off the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. This seaweed normally is found only near the Equator.
