MrMax To Sell Stockpiled Rice From ¥1,000 Per 5kg

Fukuoka-based discount retailer MrMax is preparing to sell government stockpiled rice under a discretionary contract, aiming to offer it at under ¥2,000 (excluding tax) per 5kg bag, possibly as early as early June. The company has applied to purchase 5,000 tons of 2022-harvest rice and plans to distribute it to all 57 of its stores nationwide, including those in Kyushu and the Kanto region.

Preparation includes producing one million semi-transparent rice bags labeled “Stockpiled Rice” with simple packaging to expedite sales. Recipes will be displayed in-store to help consumers enhance the taste of the older rice. MrMax also plans to offer the product online.

Current rice prices in Fukuoka retail for nearly double the expected stockpiled rice price, with some local varieties priced at ¥3,999 (excluding tax) for 5kg. The company aims to deliver affordable rice quickly and in large quantities amid continued price surges.

MrMax considers discounted stockpiled rice a way to stabilize supply and meet demand, and other retailers such as Aeon Kyushu are also preparing for similar sales. Source: MrMax / NHK
