Nagasaki Declares Medical Emergency as Cruise Ship Brings in Over Approximately 150 infected Persons

The medical association of Nagasaki Prefecture announced a state of emergency on April 23. The prefecture currently faces escalating expansion of COVID-19 infection involving the crew aboard the Costa Atlantica, an Italian-operated cruise ship docked in Nagasaki Port for maintenance. Approximately 150 persons have been tested positive in the past few days, including one hospitalized patient with severe symptoms. Some of the crew members reportedly disembarked the ship even after the prefecture issued a request for refraining such activities. While the prefecture has secured 102 beds available for treatments of the new coronavirus patients, the unexpected large-scale infections may risk a medical breakdown, including a shortage of human resources. Additionally, the region’s capacity to treat those who need ventilators is limited to fourteen or so. The association firmly requests residents to take appropriate measures to prevent infection of the virus and call medical institutions first in case they develop any corona-suspected symptoms.
