Nagasaki Prefecture to Enable Free Shipping for Outlying Island Products

Nagasaki Prefecture will begin an enterprise with Oriental Air Bridge, an airline linking the prefecture’s three main outlying islands with the prefectural airport, to use the aircraft’s empty cargo space to ship agricultural and maritime products from the islands. The expense would be borne by the prefecture rather than by the producers. The objective is to promote these products commercially and boost the airline’s income. A provision was added to the prefecture’s supplementary budget this year to provide four million yen for the enterprise. The cargo space on the aircraft is largely unused because most passengers bring only carry-on luggage with them.
