A national survey of public primary and junior high schools by the Ministry of Education showed that 968 school buildings or their gymnasiums in Kyushu needed earthquake proofing, an increase of 57 from last year. The percentage of facilities nationwide that met national standards was 73.3%, but 69.5% in Kyushu. That represents an increase from the 60.8% level of the previous year. Miyazaki had the highest percentage of buildings that met national standards at 81.5%, while Nagasaki Prefecture had the lowest at 58.9%.
