New PCB Pollution Victim Recognized in Fukuoka, First in Two Years

A new patient has been officially recognized as a victim of the Kanemi Yusho disease in Fukuoka Prefecture, the first in two years, following annual screenings. Originating from contaminated cooking oil by Kanemi Soko in Kitakyushu during the 1960s, this marks a continued effort to address Japan’s most significant food pollution incident. With the population of recognized patients aging, advocates push for expanded relief measures, including support for undiagnosed victims and children of affected individuals. As of March 22, there are 485 recognized patients living in the prefecture. Source: Fukuoka Prefecture / NHK
