The store attributed the unusual gap to expensive purchases during last year’s shortage and more stable supplies now. The nationwide average for five kilograms of branded rice stood at 2,966 yen on Sep. 25, about 1,600 yen below last November’s peak. A farmer in Chikushino warned that falling prices could make continued production difficult.
