New Underground Passage Planned for Fukuoka’s Tenjin Area

Fukuoka City has announced plans to develop a new underground walkway in Tenjin, the city’s central commercial district, aimed at enhancing convenience and accessibility. The project is part of the larger Tenjin Big Bang redevelopment initiative, which addresses the aging infrastructure of the Shintencho Shopping Street and the Fukuoka Parco area. The new passage will run 190 meters beneath Märchen Street, starting from the subway Tenjin Station to the main Iwataya store, and is expected to open around 2030. The 6-meter wide walkway is designed to improve pedestrian flow and accessibility as the surrounding commercial facilities are redeveloped. A local shopper expressed mixed feelings about the changes but acknowledged the potential convenience of the new underground route. Source: NHK
