Nippon Steel has started construction of a large electric furnace at its Kyushu Works in Kitakyushu as part of its push to reduce carbon emissions. The company is investing about ¥630.2 billion in the project and aims to begin production in the second half of fiscal 2029, with annual capacity set at two million tons. Nippon Steel said the project is part of its broader goal of cutting companywide carbon dioxide emissions by 30% by fiscal 2030. The transition will also lead to the planned suspension of the existing Tobata No. 4 blast furnace by around the end of the first half of fiscal 2030, affecting about 1,150 workers, including employees of partner companies.
